Iolite is the gem variety of the mineral Cordierite. It describes the transparent to translucent form of the mineral, and its colour can range from light to deep blue, usually heavily tinged with purple. The name Iolite is derived from the Greek "violet", alluding to the purplish tinge often exhibited by this gemstone. Strongly pleochroic, it is widely believed that Vikings used slices of Iolite to locate the Sun on cloudy days, and therefore navigate the seas.
